2024 Oscars Best Picture Eligibility Confirmed for The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla Minus One, Suzume

On Monday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences disclosed their comprehensive assemblage of films that are eligible for the Best Picture nomination for the 2024 Oscars. Presenting a strict list of qualified candidates, it is neither a shortlist nor a nomination. Out of the total 265 films, the ones related to anime or otherwise having connections to creators or franchises from Japan include:

Godzilla Minus One has made its way into the shortlist for the Visual Effects category, while Joe Hisaishi has been shortlisted in the Music (Original Score) category for The Boy and the Heron. This marks the debut of a Japanese movie making into the Academy Awards Visual Effects award shortlist.

The documentary YOSHIKI Under the Sky, which sheds light on the life of X Japan member YOSHIKI, was one of the eligible entries for the Best Documentary category but it failed to secure a place in the shortlist.

The anime features that have been qualified for the Animated Feature category from a total of 33 films are:

In addition, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also been deemed eligible for the Animated Feature Film category.

The final list of nominees will be declared by the Academy on 23rd January, with the award ceremony scheduled for March 10th.

Anime movies went unnoticed at the 95th Academy Awards, with none receiving any nominations. Movies such as INU-OH produced by Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU, Drifting Home developed by Hiroyasu Ishida and Studio Colorido, and Goodbye, Don Glees! crafted by Atsuko Ishizuka with Madhouse were all eligible for the awards, yet couldn’t attain a nomination.
