2nd Niigata Int’l Animation Festival: Maboroshi, Kurayukaba Films Compete

The Niigata International Animation Film Festival has announced its selection of feature films for its competition, which incorporates two movies from Japan, namely:
Kurayukaba
(shown on the right) and
maboroshi
. In total, twelve films are scheduled to be in the competition at this year’s festival.

Netflix initiated streaming an original anime film by Mari Okada and MAPPA, titled Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kōjō (or Alice and Therese’s Illusory Factory) under the title maboroshi which has been available since January 15. The film had its debut in Japan on September 15.

A full-length original anime film project titled Kurayukaba, produced by Shigeyoshi Tsukahara and Twiflo, is scheduled to release in Japan on April 12. Another spinoff full-length anime film named Kuramerukagari is set to launch in Japan on the same day.

The festival is taking place from March 15-20 this year.

The inaugural Niigata International Animation Film Festival took place in March 2023, and it was chaired by Mamoru Oshii. The festival featured an unreleased live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ōtomo‘s Domu manga and also highlighted Ōtomo’s work in a retrospective section. Alongside these, the festivalshowed Shinichiro Watanabe‘s (Cowboy Bebop) “A Girl Meets a Boy and a Robot“, and Shuhei Morita‘s (Freedom, Tokyo Ghoul) “Roots” (Tsuru no Mai) animated short films.

It is planned for the festival to be an annual event, aiming to be the biggest festival showcasing feature-length anime in Asia.

Niigata has a history of hosting events such as the Niigata Anime and Manga Festival and Niigata Manga Awards. Furthermore, the city is famed for being home to several anime studios.
