The project brings to life the eighth and ninth books in the franchise. Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid, which is the second part of the double feature, made its debut in Japan on December 1. It gained the fourth position in its opening weekend by selling 119,000 tickets and making a revenue of 164,594,554 yen (equivalent to US$1.11 million) within its first three days. Its precursor, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out, came out in Japan on June 23. Within the opening three days, the film kicked off by selling 118,108 tickets and making a profit of 175,648,924 yen (around US$1.28 million) placing it at #4 in its opening weekend.
The final installment of the High School story arc is the film itself. Sōichi Masui returned to direct the film at CloverWorks, and Masahiro Yokotani reprised his role of supervising and writing the script. In addition, Satomi Tamura again participated to create the characters and lead as the chief animation director.
