Godzilla Minus One Film Surpasses US$100 Million in Global Earnings

On Sunday, The Numbers website confirmed that
Godzilla Minus One, a new
movie directed by
Takashi Yamazaki and a part of
series, has achieved global earnings of the equivalent of US$102,496,330. Breaking it down, approximately US$55,009,463 was earned in the United States and US$47,486,867 came from foreign sales.

As of January 21, after 12 weekends in Japanese theatres, the movie accumulated a gross total of 5,454,610,580 yen (about US$37.0 million).

The film’s release in Japan fell on November 3, 2023, also known as “Godzilla Day”. This date marks the anniversary of the first Godzilla movie’s debut on November 3, 1954. The movie also had its premiere at The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) on November 1, serving as the event’s closing film.

During its initial three days at the Japanese box office, the movie sold 648,600 tickets, generating revenue of 1,041,193,460 yen (around US$6.93 million). Looking at these figures, the film sold 14.7% more tickets and earned 22.8% more in the first three days of release than the previous Japanese live-action Godzilla film, Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi‘s Shin Godzilla, saw in its initial three days in 2016.

Godzilla Minus One began screening in U.S. cinemas on December 1, and raked in US$11,419,975 in the first three days, ranking it #3 at the U.S. box office for its opening weekend. It broke the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend in 2023 for a foreign film in the United States, pushing past the previous record-holder, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc, which opened with earnings of US$10.1 million in March. It currently holds the title of the top-grossing Japanese live-action film in the North American market.

Takashi Yamazaki served not only as the director and the writer but also managed the visual effects on “Godzilla Minus One”. Yamazaki is predominantly known for directing live-action movies, with credits including the Always: Sunset on Third Street, Returner, and Parasyte films. However, he has also been at the helm of some notable CG films such as Stand By Me Doraemon.

The main roles in the movie are played by Ryunosuke Kamiki (protagonist Kōichi Shikishima) and Minami Hamabe (heroine Noriko Ōishi). Interestingly, both these actors are also leading the cast of NHK‘s weekday morning series Ranman. Other members of the cast include Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Andō and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
