Gundam Seed FREEDOM Records 1.8 Billion Yen in 9 Days of Screening

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM
has clocked a stunning 1.2 million viewers and generated a hefty revenue of 1.8 billion yen just nine days after its release. This news was shared in Japan today during a special screening at the Shinjuku Piccadilly cinema in Tokyo, in the presence of director
Mitsuo Fukuda
and the film’s cast.

During the first three days of screening, this film registered impressive numbers of 634,182 admissions and earned 1,065,983,130 yen, securing its place as the top performer at the box office. Such remarkable figures have earned it the title of the franchise with the most substantial performance in its initial three days. In Japan, it also recorded the highest performance over a single weekend for this year.

For comparison, Monbile Suit Gundam Hathaway registered 259,074 admissions and generated 523,943,800 yen during its first three days of screening in June 2021. It was ranked third at the box-office during its premiere weekend. It was the first film of the franchise to cross the one-billion-yen mark since Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack in 1988; earning approximately 2.21 billion yen in total.

The film was released in Japanese theaters on Friday. It was directed by Mitsuo Fukuda (Mobile Suit Gundam Seed) at Bandai Namco Filmworks. The scripts were co-authored by his late wife Chiaki Morosawa and Liu Goto. The character designs were handled by Hisashi Hirai, associated with Mobile Suit Gundam Seed.

Takanori Nishikawa, also known as T.M. Revolution, performed the main theme, freedom, with t.komuro (Tetsuya Komuro) in production. Worth mentioning is the return of See-Saw for the ending theme, Sarigiwa no Romantics – the duo’s first song in nearly two decades.
