Oscar Nominations for ‘The Boy and the Heron’, ‘Godzilla Minus One’

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences declared that the film ‘The Boy and the Heron’, a collaboration between
Hayao Miyazaki
Studio Ghibli
has been nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Additionally, ‘Elemental’, ‘Nimona’, ‘Robot Dreams’, and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ have also been listed in the same category.

Adding to the line-up of nominees, Godzilla Minus One‘s Takashi Yamazaki, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi, and Tatsuji Nojima have been nominated for Best Visual Effects. Further, the Japanese film ‘Perfect Days’ directed by Wim Wenders, has secured a nomination for Best International Feature Film.

The star-studded awards ceremony is scheduled to occur at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 10.

Last year, at the 95th Academy Awards, no anime films received nominations. Nevertheless, certain movies such as Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU‘s ‘INU-OH’, Hiroyasu Ishida and Studio Colorido‘s ‘Drifting Home’, and Atsuko Ishizuka and Madhouse‘s ‘Goodbye, Don Glees!’ were all eligible for consideration at the awards ceremony.

‘The Boy and the Heron’ garnered the Best Motion Picture – Animated award at the 81st Golden Globes Awards held earlier this month. Concurrently, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists conferred the Best Animated Film award on the same at the EDA Awards on December 31. The film has been declared as the recipient of the Noburou Oofuji Award, which recognizes animated films contributing new forms of innovative expression, at the upcoming 78th Mainichi Film Awards scheduled for February 14. The film has additionally received nominations from the Annie Awards (for animated feature, directing, and writing) and the British Academy Film Awards (for animated film).
