The English translations of the light novels are being provided by Yen Press who have also provided a brief synopsis of the series:
The roamings of a seller can often be a solitary enterprise, a reality that Kraft Lawrence is quite familiar with. Roaming from one place to the next with his horse, cart, and his current merchandise, Lawrence has comfortably settled into his lifestyle. That is, until he discovers a divine wolf sleeping in his cart one fateful night. Taking the form of an enchanting girl with the ears and tail of a wolf, Holo has grown tired of attending to the crops in the rural areas and proposes a deal with the merchant providing him the clever insight of “Holo the Wise wolf” to enhance his merchant skills. In return, she asks to be taken with him on his travels. Who can say no to such an offer? However, Lawrence soon learns that hosting an ageless deity as a travel companion may not be a blessing in every sense. Will this wolf maiden end up being a wild condition that is too challenging for Lawrence to regulate?
With illustrations by Jū Ayakura, Hasekura unveiled the Spice and Wolf series of novels back in 2006. The novels took a hiatus after the release of the 17th volume in 2011, making a comeback with the 18th edition in 2016. The 24th and so far the latest edition showed up in January 2023. The 24th edition was also released by Yen Press in North America in August. They are also responsible for the publication of the manga adaptation. A spinoff series from Hasekura, titled Wolf & Parchment: New Theory Spice & Wolf, took off in April 2016. Yen Press is also distributing the spinoff series, including its manga adaptation, in English.
The series of novels have also been a source of inspiration for two TV anime seasons orchestrated by director Takeo Takahashi and scriptwriter Naruhisa Arakawa. The original season was televised in Japan from January to March 2008, with the second installment, Spice and Wolf II, airing from July to September 2009. Both installments have been released on home video by Funimation.
Following the television anime, a virtual reality anime adaptation was created and released in June 2019 for Oculus Rift, HTC VIVE, and Oculus Go Edition, followed by a sequel that premiered in December 2020.
