Suzume’s The Boy and the Heron Nominated for Best Feature at Annie Awards

ASIFA-Hollywood, also known as The International Animated Film Society, unveiled the nominees for the 51st iteration of its widely-renowned Annie Awards this past Thursday.

were both put forth as nominees for the esteemed Best Feature award.

The Boy and the Heron earned additional nominations in the Feature categories for Best Character Animation, Best Direction, Best Music, Best Production Design , Best Storyboarding, and Best Writing. In a similar vein, Suzume garnered collateral nominations in the Feature categories for Best FX, Best Character Animation, Best Music, Best Storyboarding, superior Voice Acting – with Hokuto Matsumura recognized for his portrayal of Sōta Munakata – as well as Best Writing.

Meanwhile, the ever-entertaining Jack Black merited a Best Voice Acting – Feature nomination for his performance as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The short animated series, “Pokémon: Path to the Peak“, earned a nomination for Best TV/Media – Limited Series. Topping it off, the nomination for Best Direction – TV/Media was claimed by the Pokémon Concierge series, produced using stop-motion animation.

The holographic Star Wars: Visions Volume 2 project managed to collect various TV/Media nominations for its outstanding “Sith” episode by Spanish El Guiri, including Best FX and Best Production Design, Best Character Animation for its “I Am Your Mother” episode by Aardman from the United Kingdom, Best Direction and Best Editorial for its “Screecher’s Reach” episode by Irish Cartoon Saloon, as well as Best Music courtesy of its “Aau’s Song” episode, a production by Triggerfish from South Africa.

The live-action adaptation of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts secured a nomination in the Best Character Animation – Live Action division.

Not to be forgotten, composer Joe Hisaishi from Studio Ghibli is set to receive the distinguished Winsor McCay Award, presented in honour of contributions made throughout one’s career or lifetime.

The celebratory awards ceremony is scheduled for the 17th of February, at the famous Royce Hall, on the campus of UCLA.

The aim of the Annie Awards is to acknowledge and honour exceptional contributions made to the field of animation. Since 2015, ASIFA-Hollywood has presented the Best Animated Independent Feature award to provide a platform for independent animators, international studios, anime creators and other special productions, and to ensure their achievements receive the recognition they deserve.Mamoru Hosoda‘s film, Mirai, was recognised with this award back in 2019.

The CGI-animated series Oni: Thunder God’s Tale from California production house Tonko Housewas presented with awards for Best TV/Media – Limited Series and Best Production Design – TV/Media in last year’s ceremony.

Significantly, no anime films received awards in 2022, 2021, or 2020. The late director Satoshi Kon was posthumously honoured with the prestigious Winsor McCay Award at the 2020 awards.
