Viz Media and Manga Plus Release English Version of Kaiju No. 8: B-Side Spinoff Manga
On January 4, Viz Media along with Shueisha‘s MANGA Plus unleashed the initial chapter of a spinoff manga from Kentarō Hidano and Keiji Andō‘s work: Kaiju No. 8 side B. This manga is an extension of Naoya Matsumoto‘s Kaiju No. 8 and the following chapter is poised for publication on January 11.
As per the details provided by MANGA Plus, the plotline explores the untold tales of the Defense Force’s dramatic encounters not revealed in the main narrative series.
The original manga’s fame has resulted in an animated adaptation set to see its inaugural screening in April 2024 on TV Tokyo and its associate channels. The globally acclaimed platform Crunchyroll holds the rights to broadcast the anime along with its English dub counterpart.
Alongside, this anime series will also be live-streamed globally on X/Twitter and concurs with the real-time broadcasting in Japan.
The originator of the manga, Matsumoto, first introduced it on Shueisha‘s Shonen Jump+ platform in July 2020. The inaugural print volume commenced shipping in December of the same year, gaining immense popularity which led to multiple print runs to cater to its high demand. The 11th collected book volume, launched by Shueisha, was made available on December 4.
With the licensing of the manga in the hands of Viz Media, the chapters are made accessible both online digitally and in a physical printed format. Also published by Shueisha on its MANGA Plus service, the manga goes by the name Monster #8, and the storyline centers around:
A man laboring a mundane job, far from his dreams of childhood, suddenly finds himself amidst an unforeseen event…! Transformed into a monster, he revives his aspirations of realizing his childhood dream…!
In a remarkable feat in September 2021, the manga surpassed the distribution of 4 million copies, hence becoming the fastest amongst the Shonen Jump+ manga line (excluding manga presented in Shueisha‘s print magazines) to achieve this milestone.
Acknowledging its quality and popularity, the manga series secured nominations for the prestigious 14th Manga Taisho Awards in January 2021, the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Award in February 2022, and the renowned Eisner awards in May 2022. In recognition of its achievement, it secured the first position in the “Next Manga Awards” (Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taishō), under the category of web manga, in August 2021.
